Sector 1: Am I Required to Enrol?
1. What actually triggers the requirement to enrol with AUSTRAC?
If your business provides one or more “designated services” listed in Section 6 of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) Act and has a geographical link to Australia, you are legally required to enrol. You can verify your status using the AUSTRAC Enrolment Checker.
2. I am an accountant/corporate secretary. Do I need to enrol?
Yes, if you perform gatekeeper activities. These include acting as a company director/secretary, managing client funds/accounts, creating corporate structures/trusts, or executing property and asset transactions.

3. Do I need to enrol if I only offer basic bookkeeping and tax return preparation?
No. Standard, non-advisory tax preparation and routine internal bookkeeping do not fall under AUSTRAC’s definition of designated professional services.
4. What is the difference between “Enrolment” and “Registration”?
- Enrolment: A universal requirement for all reporting entities providing designated services.
- Registration: An additional, stricter background assessment required specifically for Remittance Service Providers (money transfers) and Virtual Asset Service Providers (cryptocurrency exchanges)
Sector 2: Deadlines, Timelines, & Penalties
5. What is the strict deadline to enrol?
You must submit your enrolment form via AUSTRAC Online within 28 days of providing your very first designated service to a client. Therefore, you must enrol with AUSTRAC by 29 July 2026 if you provide any of the newly designated services commencing on 1 July 2026.
6. What happens if I fail to enrol or register within the 28-day window?
Failing to enrol while providing services is a criminal offense. AUSTRAC can apply daily compounding civil penalties through the Federal Court, costing up to 60 penalty units per day for corporations.

7. If I bought an existing corporate practice that is already enrolled, do I have to re-enrol?
Yes, if the business structure changes to a new legal entity with a new Australian Business Number (ABN). Enrolments are tied strictly to individual corporate legal identifiers.
Sector 3: Completing the Enrolment Form
8. What documentation do I need to prepare before opening the form?
You must gather your legal entity credentials (ABN/ACN), Global Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) if held, details of your target industry associations, ultimate holding company data, and full personal details of your Compliance Officer.

9. Can I submit the enrolment form without a designated Compliance Officer?
No. Your application will be blocked without nominating a compliance contact. However, you can designate a primary interim contact, provided a formal Compliance Officer is officially locked into the system within 28 days.
10. What does AUSTRAC mean by asking for a “Geographical Link” to Australia?
The form asks if you carry out designated services through a permanent establishment in Australia, or if you are an Australian resident/subsidiary providing services through a permanent establishment overseas. An affirmative answer confirms your domestic oversight.

11. What is an AUSTRAC Account Number (AAN)?
An AAN is your unique regulatory identifier generated automatically upon submitting the AUSTRAC Business Profile Form (ABPF). You will use this number for all formal communications, reports, and compliance updates.
12. We operate as a group of entities. Do we file one single enrolment form?
No. Each individual subsidiary entity that delivers a designated service must complete its own enrolment. However, during setup, you can indicate that you form part of a “Designated Business Group (DBG)” to pool your compliance programs.
Sector 4: Post-Enrolment Obligations
13. Does enrolling mean my Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Program is automatically approved?
No. Enrolment merely alerts the regulator to your presence. You must independently draft, implement, and maintain an active AML/CTF Compliance Program tailored to your firm’s specific commercial risk profile.
14. How much does it cost to enrol or maintain my status?
Enrolment via the portal is completely free. However, enrolled entities may be subject to an annual AUSTRAC Industry Levy if their total corporate earnings cross regulatory revenue thresholds.
15. Do I need to report international bank details during my portal onboarding?
Only if you are enrolling as a specialised financial provider or remittance house. Standard professional firms do not need to log internal banking SWIFT or IBAN profiles during baseline enrolment.
16. What are my ongoing maintenance obligations after getting my AAN?
You must update your business details on AUSTRAC Online within 14 days of any material change, such as a shift in legal name, trading address, corporate structure, or change in your designated Compliance Officer.
Sector 5: Reporting & Transaction Triggers
17. Once enrolled, do I have to report every transaction?
No. Enrolment requires you to monitor transactions and file reports only when specific triggers occur, such as a cash payment hitting a regulatory ceiling or detecting unusual activity.
18. What is a Threshold Transaction Report (TTR) trigger?
You are legally required to file a TTR within 10 business days if your business physically handles a single cash transaction (or a series of deliberate, linked physical transfers) totalling AUD $10,000 or more.

19. What is a Suspicious Matter Report (SMR) trigger
An SMR must be filed via your portal if you suspect a transaction or client interaction relates to tax evasion, fraud, money laundering, or terrorism financing. SMRs require strict confidentiality under anti-tipping-off laws.

20. Do I have to file an annual report if I had no suspicious activity?
Yes. Enrolled entities must submit an annual AML/CTF Compliance Report via AUSTRAC Online. This report confirms your program’s functional status, independent review history, and staff training metrics.
